A friend of mine sent this to me. I think I am going to have to go. Maybe I'll pick up a few things.
Ropes 2007 Lecture Series
English
Jan-09-2007
Location
ERC 427
Start Time
8 p.m.
The Ropes 2007 Lecture Series, titled "Writing Sex," opens Jan. 9. "Writing Sex" is an introduction to the study of the representation of sexuality in a wide variety of literary forms. Drawing energy from lesbian and gay studies and from queer theory, "Writing Sex" casts a critical gaze over the construction and representation of all sexualities, not just queer ones. In the process of studying the representation of sex and sexuality, we hope to learn more about one of the most important dimensions of how contemporary Western individuals define themselves, both individually and collectively. The series begins Jan. 9 with David Halperin, whose lecture is titled "What Do Gay Men Want? Sex, Risk and the Subject Life of Homosexuality." Other speakers, dates and topics are: Scott Heim, Jan. 16, "When Personal is Too Personal: Confessing in Fiction Without Alienating the Audience"; David Román, Jan. 30, "Archival Drag"; Judith Halberstam, Feb. 7, "Penguin Love, Doll Sex and the Spectacle of the Non-Reproductive Body"; and Mary Gaitskill, Feb. 27, "The Nasty Bits: A Last Dab of Color." All lectures begin at 8 p.m. in ERC 427. The Ropes 2007 Lecture Series is sponsored by the Nathaniel P. Ropes Endowment and the Department of English and Comparative Literature, McMicken College of Arts & Sciences.
